Marshall “Major” Taylor
This month is Black History Month and we, the cyclists of
Houston, would like to acknowledge Marshall “Major” Taylor as one of the
first African-American World Champions in any sport.
Before Labron James, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Kobe
Bryant, Terrel Owens, Emmit Smith, Jerry Rice, Mike Tyson, Bo Jackson, Carl
Lewis, Cassius Clay, Jackie Robinson, and many other African-American
Champions; there is one whose story is so remarkable it must be told.
Over a century ago Major Taylor became a World Champion at
the age of 19. He was an American sprint champion in 1898,1899,
and 1900. He had triumphant tours in Europe and Australia, as well as victories
against all European champions.
Come and visit this
extraordinary exhibit of Major Taylor and other African-American Cyclists for
the month of February starting on 2-16-09 thru 2-27-09 @ Judson Robinson Jr.
Community Center.
